The Drum Horse
The history of the Drum Horse begins in England. They have a long history in the British Army and are members of the Household Calvary Mounted Regiment division. They carry out regular ceremonial duties throughout the year and are most known for their participation in the Queen’s birthday ceremony, Trooping the Colour. They carry a rider fully dressed in ceremonial gear and two large solid silver drums all weighing in excess of 400lbs! The rider’s reins are attached to their stirrups in order to free their hands, which allows them to play the drums. Every ceremonial session has at least one Drum horse leading the way.
Drum horses can be a variety of colors in either solid or colored patterns and are a minimum of 16hh. They are a combination of Clydesdale, Shire and Gypsy breeding where no single breed exceeds 87% and the Gypsy breeding does not fall below 12.5% or exceed 50%. Horses matching this type can be registered with the International Drum Horse Association (IDHA). The combination makes for a lighter, more agile heavy riding horse which can be ridden in a multitude of different disciplines. Drum horses are very smart and level headed with a gentle and sweet disposition. This allows them to perform in large crowds and also makes for a great show horse.
